Career Highlights:

James Shelton is a financial professional with over twenty years of senior-level accounting experience. He is currently CFO of northern Kentucky's largest restaurant group, with over 950 employees. He has served as CFO, divisional CFO, and controller during his previous fifteen-year banking career. During that time, he managed a $100 million investment portfolio, achieving top-quartile performance ranking. In 2015, he successfully led a $5 million expansion as board chair for Burlington YMCA. 2015 was also the year he received the Dr. Tom Cate Distinguished NKU MBA Alumni Award.

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

    After completing this class, our students should have the confidence and the tools to take an active role in their own investments throughout the course of their careers; applying the principles of diversification, risk measurement, and sensitivity to the market.

  • What advice would you give to those considering an MBA online program?

    Stay up to date on all your weekly assignments. The text material and the associated problem sets offer an excellent way to progress one's learning as the investment principles and formulas build upon one another. Those students that develop the discipline to work through the weekly material while also making the most of live online class sessions tend to perform the best.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful as an investor?

    Investment professionals that first fully understand their clients' goals for any investment portfolio (growth, income stream, capital preservation, etc.) and then clearly map out the risk tolerances of their clients, have the best ability to structure portfolios and investment decisions that meet their clients' objectives.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that investors face today?

    The sheer abundance of information investors have access to requires a disciplined approach to how investment choices are analyzed and what new information warrants a change in investment strategy or decision.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

    "Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise" by Anders Ericsson.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you.

    I play guitar in a local band. We play several different events each year raising money for charities that are close to us.
