Shannon Alexander
Health Science Program Director and Assistant Professor
I have found the most successful students in my classes have excellent communication skills, are self-motivated and above all, have effective time management skills. My advice for any online student is to really focus on these three areas.
Degrees Held:
- Master of Health Administration – Ohio University, 2011
- B.S. in Radiation Science – University of Cincinnati, 2009
- Certificate in Radiation Therapy – University of Cincinnati, 2000
- AAS in Radiologic Technology – Xavier University, 1999
Career Highlights:
Prior to teaching at NKU, I worked for several years in healthcare management as the Chief Radiation Therapist for Oncology Hematology Care. I also taught in the Allied Health Department as an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati.
My academic and research interests include pathology, digital radiography, ethico-legal issues in healthcare, healthcare management and leadership.
Which online degree program(s) do you teach?
Which classes do you teach online?
HSC 291: Writing in the Health Sciences; HSC 410: Healthcare Management; HSC 440: Issues in Chronic Disease Management; HSC 494: Medicolegal Issues in Healthcare; HSC 580: Applied Healthcare Management; HSC 630: Strategic Planning Services for Health Science
Why did you start teaching?
Honestly, I never planned to get into teaching and really saw my professional future in healthcare management and administration. My plans changed when a past professor contacted me to ask a favor. She was in a bind and needed someone to teach her course on short notice. In an effort to help, I kindly (and reluctantly) agreed. After a few classes, I surprisingly found I absolutely loved teaching! Not only was it rewarding, but I enjoyed getting to know my students and helping them succeed. I continued to teach part-time for several years and finally made the switch to teaching full-time in 2012 at NKU.
What advice would you give to those considering this online program?
I believe the biggest misconception with online learning is that it is easier than the traditional face-to-face course. Students quickly realize that is not the case. I have found the most successful students in my classes have excellent communication skills, are self-motivated and, above all, have effective time-management skills. My advice for any online student is to really focus on these three areas.
