  • Ph.D. in Educational Psychology – University of Alabama, 2014
  • Master in Secondary Education – University of Alabama, 2006
  • BBA – University of Alabama, 2000

Career Highlights:

Dr. Alverson has been teaching at Northern Kentucky University for four years. Previously, he taught at the University of Alabama, and spent 12 years at Alabama working on various degrees. He also taught high school social science for three years in the Tuscaloosa school system. He has written, presented, and published articles in the areas of hope, sense of belonging, student success, college teaching, early childhood education, and middle grades education.

    I want students to learn what drives them and their students to seek knowledge, learn, and become really engaged in whatever they are doing.

  • Why did you start teaching?

    I started teaching because I loved history and wanted to share my love of history with my students.

  • What advice would you give to those considering an online education programs?

    Jump in and have fun. It will be awesome!

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in education?

    One must be passionate, patient, and caring.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in education face today?

    The main challenge is understanding how to teach students who come to the classroom with a diverse range of interests, skills, and preferences for learning.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

    A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking or The Foxfire Book by Eliot Wigginton.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you.

    I am married to an awesome wife, Kathy, and have three kids - Jillian, Tucker, and Elliot.
