  • Which classes do you teach online?

    PSY 100: Introduction to Psychology

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

Students often have many misconceptions about psychology. I spend time focusing on psychology as a science that uses time-tested experimental research methods to evaluate treatments for everyday problems we all encounter.

I want students to be able to apply psychology to all the aspects of their daily lives.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online program?

Communication is critical for online success. My experiences have taught me that online students need as much access to their professors as students in a face-to-face class. Putting a face with your name is important. Use Zoom and FaceTime to connect and engage with your instructors.

  • What inspired you to teach psychology?

I have 28 years of experience as a practitioner, which allows me to share many stories related to the theory of psychological perspectives. Providing students with examples of activities that I used with my clients helps me with student engagement.

  • What are some of the challenges psychology professors face today?

The biggest challenge to teaching is actively engaging your students in the classroom. Death by PowerPoint and asking students to sit back and listen to you while they take notes is not as effective with Generation Z.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I retired from the Kenton County School District on July 1, 2015, after working as a school psychologist for 28 years. I started teaching to share my practical experiences as a school psychologist and to continue working with students.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhigg.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

I enjoy chess in my downtime. Chess.com is a site where you can play chess with people from all over the world. You can play games based on times from 3 minutes to 24 hours. I love problem-solving and the endless possibilities of the single chess move.
