  • Why did you start teaching?

I spent a decade managing in the private sector and had many successes and failures leading others. I wanted to share my practical experiences with future leaders in the context of the evidence provided by scholarly research.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online program?

Online learning requires self-discipline and taking ownership of your education. Connect with your professors and classmates as often as possible. Get the most out of your college experience by staying engaged with the people, as well as the material.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?

Empathy, listening, self-assessment, and openness to coaching

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

An organizational focus on efficiency and profit at the expense of people. This is engrained in the culture of many organizations, and it is difficult to reprioritize and lead the organization toward a more inclusive, community-minded, and stakeholder-centric direction. There is a vested interest in maintaining the status quo and overcoming tradition and outdated practices is an uphill battle.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"On the Road" by Jack Kerouac

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you:

I have been collecting vinyl records for many years, and I enjoy making experimental music. I have also traveled to Japan, Europe, and throughout the U.S.

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

Ultimately, I want my students to recognize and practice effective, ethical, and empathetic leadership.
