  • Conducted studies on the effects and significance of grammatical errors, stylistic errors, and factual errors in news articles as well as studies that specifically examine message effects and information processing in digital and social media

    JOU 110: Introduction to Mass Communication

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

    "Introduction to Mass Communication” is a general education course that fills a Foundation of Knowledge requirement for many of NKU's online programs.

    The student learning outcomes are:

    • Identify, interpret, and evaluate assumptions, evidence, conclusions, and theories as they relate to the mass media
    • Distinguish between scientific and non-science explanations as they relate to the mass media by employing scientific methods
    • Demonstrate an understanding of various influences on human behavior as they relate to the mass media
    • Recognize elements of the communication process and the different types of communication settings
    • Explain the functions that mass media performs for individuals and for society as a whole and identify potential negative consequences of the mass media
    • Describe the history and analyze current trends of the mass media

    Online courses can be wonderful learning opportunities for students, but they require some self-motivation. I would recommend coming up with an organizational system for yourself. Students who succeed tend to be those who can stay organized and keep up with the material. Deadlines come up quickly!

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

    Before joining NKU, I worked in print media as a copy editor, proofreader, and page designer. In college, I interned at The Washington Times and The Washington Post, following training at my high school and college newspapers.

    I then worked for Freedom Communications as a copy editor and page designer on a consolidated/hub newsdesk for publications across the Florida Panhandle: Apalachicola Times; Crestview News Bulletin; The Destin Log; Gulf Defender; Holmes County Times­Advertiser; Northwest Florida Daily News; Panama City News Herald; Santa Rosa Press Gazette; The Star, Port St. Joe; The Walton Sun; and Washington County News.

    I also worked as a freelance copy editor and proofreader for multiple organizations, including Voices of Central Pennsylvania, the Atlantic Publishing Group, Inc., and Samsung Research America.
