Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

M.A.Ed. Teacher as Leader – Moderate & Severe Disabilities

  • Which classes do you teach online?

EDG 666: Introduction to Education of Students with Exceptionalities, EDG 653: Language Development of Students with Disabilities

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn?

    • Explain the role of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team and plan
    • Differentiate between various disabilities and the specific needs of individuals based on their learning differences
    • Identify the social implications of living with a disability and the impact society has on living and learning independently
    • Assess language use and communicative intent of an individual with a disability
    • Research and analyze recent research on a specific topic of interest on language/communication
    • Develop lesson plans designed to enhance language for students with disabilities
  • What advice would you give to those considering an online master's in education program?

I took my master's online. It was nice to have the flexibility of timing, but takes a lot of personal commitment. I would say to someone considering this program that each course has been created to offer unique lessons to help broaden your understanding and competency in working with students in the special education community.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in education?

To be a successful educator, one must be compassionate, understanding, flexible, and collaborative.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that educators face today?

I think the hardest thing is working with the various regulations from the state and national levels as well as constant changes to expectations. Schools are always trying a new approach to teaching without giving proper time or training.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I began teaching to help inspire others to find the best in each and every student they work with. As a special educator, I know that my students encounter many educators throughout their educational journey and I want to facilitate their understanding that whatever disability may exist, each student has a great ability within them.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

    Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you.

I have four young children. Three are in elementary school and one is in preschool; so I am working on wearing a parent hat through a teacher lens.
