Dr. Rudy Garns

Associate Professor and Director

Dr. Rudy Garns - NKU Faculty

The big, complex, real-world problems that confront us all require interdisciplinary insights and solutions. I am fortunate to be in a position to help students see these problems from perspectives that are philosophical, scientific, humanistic, social and political.

Degrees Held:

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy – Syracuse University
  • M.A. in Philosophy – Northern Illinois University
  • B.A. in Philosophy – McDaniel College

Career Highlights:

  • Recently I taught courses in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of mind. My approach to philosophical issues is interdisciplinary and I'm especially interested in what sciences like psychology and biology can tell us about traditional philosophical issues regarding the conscious mind and thinking. A good example is my course on neuroethics, where we explore what neuroscientific research can tell us about ethical decision making and what ethics can tell us about neuroscientific research and results. The big, complex, real-world problems that confront us all require interdisciplinary insights and solutions. I am fortunate to be in a position to help students see these problems from perspectives that are philosophical, scientific, humanistic, social and political. My dual roles as philosophy professor and Integrative Studies director fit perfectly.

Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

B.A. in Integrative Studies

  • Which classes do you teach online?

I'm teaching a philosophy course online this summer. It's a general education course – Intro to Philosophy – that is open to all undergrad students.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online program?

Students are designing their own programs; they're tailoring the program to their own particular interest and their goals. It's not an intense major in one area; you're trying to integrate. It's about depth and breadth. A lot of the studies coming out of HR departments and from CEOs is that the market is looking for people who have both breadth and depth; people who have some advanced coursework, but in a broader array of areas – not just one major.

As far as advice, work together with other students in the program and make sure to submit your assigns in a timely fashion. Specific to the integrative studies: check in regularly with your advisor. It's self-designed. You may find yourself in a program that's not working for you. Many students are transferring in. My advice is to keep regular communication with your advisor.

I think of the online student like I do any other student. They're NKU students.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

At NKU I've had the opportunity to travel around the world with a number of study abroad classes. London, Belize, and Fiji were amazing. I also visited Beijing, Greece, and Sri Lanka as an NKU faculty member. I strongly recommend our International Study program at NKU. When traveling, I always take my camera and I love photographing people and places. I also love taking pictures of nature and I've traveled to the Galapagos Islands and Tanzania to capture lions, lizards and birds. My next adventure will be a photography trip to Costa Rica.
