Dr. Carl Miller

Associate Professor

Dr. Carl Miller - NKU Faculty

I enjoy interacting with students and helping them gain knowledge. The excitement they bring when they see they can complete tasks in a math-oriented class gives them a boost in confidence.

Degrees Held:

  • Ph.D. in Statistics – University of South Carolina, 2002
  • M.S. in Statistics – University of South Carolina, 2002
  • B.S. in Mathematics – University of South Carolina Spartanburg, 1993

Career Highlights:

  • Co-authored the textbook “Business Statistics,” 2008
  • Directed undergraduate research related to probability of winning basketball games based on current season metrics

  • Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

    Various undergraduate programs

  • Which classes do you teach online?

STA 205: Introduction to Statistical Methods

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

I want my students to understand connections between statistics and their fields of interest and to be able to spot appropriate and inappropriate use of techniques learned in the course. I also hope they leave with a sense of accomplishment as they discover that they can actually do statistics.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I enjoy interacting with students and helping them gain knowledge. The excitement they bring when they see they can complete tasks in a math-oriented class gives them a boost in confidence.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online program?

First, do not think an online course is easier than a face-to-face course. You also need to be very organized. Create a schedule of when you will complete all tasks and stick to the schedule. Short courses leave little chance to catch up if you fall behind, so stick to your schedule.

Also, the biggest shortcoming I see is that students do not ask questions when they need help. Whatever mechanism is in place to get help, use it! Don't be afraid to ask for help because our goal is success for students.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?

To be successful in statistics, you must have strong analytical skills, good technology skills that include some programming knowledge, and clear communication.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

I enjoy riding roller coasters. My favorite ones currently include Steel Vengeance and GateKeeper (at Cedar Point in Ohio), Intimidator 305 (at Kings Dominion in Virginia), Fury 325 (at Carowinds in North Carolina), and Diamondback and Banshee (at Kings Island in Ohio).
