  • Which class(es) do you teach online?

MKT 605: Marketing in Organizations and SPB 200: Rivalry and Rituals: International Sport

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

The courses I teach are very different from each other, but in each, I hope students learn to think critically (e.g., evaluate several perspectives) about the course topics and apply our learning to diverse situations faced by current businesses in a global marketplace.

  • Why did you start teaching?

Learning is an exercise/experience I've always enjoyed, even though it can often be challenging. Becoming a lifelong learner is important to me, and I believe it should be important to others as well. As a teacher, I have the chance to assist others in their quest for new knowledge and experiences. Often by helping others learn, I, too, continue to learn in collaboration with my students.

  • What advice would you give to those considering an online business program?

You are already off to a good start by reading faculty profiles such as this one. Explore who will be leading you in your education journey and engage them in the conversations that are presented by course material. Be active in your education to get the most out of it, and plan your time and progression carefully to ensure the best opportunity for success.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in business?

Openness to new ideas, perspectives, and processes while also fully grasping the current structure and operations of the industry is very important. Each industry has its own nuances, and some of those are important for organizational and individual success. However, some nuances may be outdated and could be improved with new technology or ideas. The only way to discern between the necessary and the outdated is to develop a deep understanding of current industry operations.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in business face today?

Discerning what practices to maintain and what practices to update or eliminate as the environment changes is a huge challenge. For example, the digital revolution in video broadcasting and streaming has substantially changed the spectator sports industry and, therefore, organizations within that industry must adapt appropriately.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” by Michael Lewis

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you.

I branded the "Battle of the Bricks" rivalry series between Miami University and Ohio University. I've also qualified for the Boston Marathon four times and ran it in 2016. Lastly, I'm known for my green shoes around campus (to support FUEL NKU, the campus food pantry).
