  • Ph.D. in Human Resource Management – University of Kentucky
  • MBA and B.A. in Economics – University of Louisville

Career Highlights:

  • At NKU, I served as dean of the College of Business (1998-2007) and as the founding director of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Center, where I work as a negotiator and mediator for various organizations in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio
  • In 2013, the NKU Board of Regents bestowed upon me the highest recognition a faculty member can receive – Regents Professor of Management. I was honored to be the first Regents Professor from the College of Business and only the 11th in NKU's history.
  • I also was honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Kentucky Labor-Management Conference in 2010 for my work as an author, negotiator, teacher, and mediator in the field of human resource management and labor relations

  • Why did you start teaching?

    I started teaching part time while working as a personnel director and it changed my life. I decided to pursue both careers.

  • What advice would you give to those considering an online degree program?

    Online classes require students to be very disciplined and self-starters who can follow the syllabus and meet assignment deadlines.

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

    My courses provide students the foundation knowledge, concepts, and real-world skills needed to succeed in any type of organization.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in Human Resources?

    Successful HR professionals are intelligent, motivated, have a strong work ethic, and are ethical in their decision-making. In addition, they have broad shoulders, which are needed to consistently make tough personnel decisions that are fair to all.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in HR face today?

    The greatest challenge in HR today is to attract, motivate, and retain great talent.

    “Negotiation & Conflict Resolution: Skills, Concepts, Techniques” by Michael R. Carrell, Christina Heavrin, Louis J. Manchise, and Amber Maureen Carrell.

    I love classic cars from the 1950s and 1960s.
