IST 397: Interdisciplinary Inquiry and IST 497: Capstone in Integrative Studies
What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?
In integrative studies courses, I want students to learn that we are all capable of interdisciplinary problem-solving and that, using their disciplinary interests, we can better understand social, economic, political, and environmental issues. I want students to know that following their passions can also contribute to making the world a better place and that interdisciplinary thinking is an empowering skill set.
Why did you start teaching?
I have always taught at some level whether that be in a formal setting at a university or at an outdoor education workshop. I love how teaching is both learning and sharing.
What advice would you give to those considering this online program?
Integrative studies is challenging, and often students aren't prepared for the rigors of thinking and researching in interdisciplinary ways. My advice is to approach it with an open mind, stay focused on your passions and the disciplinary areas that drive you, and to ask questions. Engage with the course as much as possible.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?
In integrative studies, you absolutely must be open-minded, passionate about complex problem-solving, and prepared to tolerate some uncertainties in both your own ideas and where the research takes you. I find that integrative studies attracts people who are change-makers, passionate and dedicated to their areas of focus.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?
Integrative studies is a skill set rather than a profession, which makes it the perfect degree path for people interested in exploring, creating their own professional pathways, or deepening their connections within their current careers. Oftentimes, students say it is challenging to describe what integrative studies is, so we work on articulating what it means to be an interdisciplinary thinker.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
“The Overstory: A Novel” by Richard Powers (2019).
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.
I live on a farm and love spending time with farm animals. I am never happier than when in the fields and forests with other animals.
