Minimum 2.75 GPA or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 30 credit hours
Passing Praxis® Core scores or GRE® scores

Alternative Certification in Special Education – Learning & Behavior Disorders Admission Requirements

  • Complete online application for admission
  • Pay $40 non-refundable application fee
    • If you are an NKU alumni or active/veteran military member, your application fee will be waived
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) coursework from regionally accredited institutions. Transcripts must include completion of a college-level mathematics course (cannot be at the remedial level) with a grade of C or higher.
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 30 credit hours, including undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Successful completion of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) exam or the GRE General Test with minimum passing scores as follows:
    • Praxis Core: 156 in Reading; 150 in Mathematics; 162 in Writing
    • GRE: 150 in Verbal Reasoning; 143 in Quantitative Reasoning; 4.0 in Analytical Writing
  • Submit a Federal Criminal Background Check; a teaching certificate may be submitted in lieu of the background check (submit copy of current teaching certificate or out-of-state equivalent—new teachers in Kentucky may submit a Kentucky Statement of Eligibility)
  • Supplemental application

Upon being admitted, new students will be expected to provide: an offer of employment from a Kentucky school district in an LBD or MSD position; a signed Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky Certified Personnel, the College of Education, and the Council for Exceptional Children; a curriculum contract, and a mentorship agreement.

Current views of literacy; theories of literacy; approaches, methods, and materials of reading assessment, planning, and instruction. Required for standard elementary certification.

Definitions, etiological factors, assessment, and remedial approaches for learning and behavior disorders.

Characteristics and educational programs for students who have intellectual disabilities or orthopedic and/or health impairments.

Principles, instruments, and procedures to place and plan instruction for students with learning or behavior disorders.

Principles of behavior analysis applied to curriculum, methodology, and management of students with disabilities; behavioral teaching methods contrasted with alternative management techniques.

Legislation and instructional practices relating to the education of students with exceptionalities. Course covers various methods of co-teaching as well as locating, adapting, and developing materials and methods for including students with disabilities in general elementary, middle, and secondary classrooms.

Characteristics of adolescents with learning and behavior disorders; educational programming for secondary students with mild disabilities.

Classroom field experience in added area of certification; individual project.
