Enhance your teaching background to align more closely to the needs of students with moderate and severe disabilities when you complete the Alternative Certification in Special Education – Moderate & Severe Disabilities online program. Designed for teachers with or without learning and behavior disorders certification (15 credit hours if LBD certified; 19-22 credit hours if not), this specialized online program offers you the academic preparation you need to become a fully certified special education teacher to exceptional students with wide-ranging needs.
In this CAEP-accredited online program, you will learn to accommodate your instructional practices to meet the needs of students with intellectual disabilities, orthopedic disabilities, and/or other health impairments (speech/visual/hearing). You will also explore the use of assistive technology to counterbalance students' disabilities and discover innovative ways to elevate their functional skills, among other things. Plus, you will be able to apply your knowledge to real-world settings in the field experience courses. As a student in this alternative certification online program, you can apply for tuition assistance through the Kentucky Traineeship Program for special education.*
As an alum of the online Alternative Certification in Special Education – MSD program, you will be uniquely prepared to teach students facing profound academic, physical, and social challenges in whole group, small group, and one-on-one settings. Upon completion of the program, you can also apply a portion of your earned credit hours toward any of the five online Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader degree programs at NKU.
