Growing up seeing his grandfather teach at a university, Mark McKinley understood the importance of an education. But as a young adult, the circumstances weren’t right for him to pursue college full time, and he spent the next 25 years in the supply chain industry, picking up a couple associate degrees along the way and eventually settling in Hebron, Kentucky.
One of his community college professors recognized Mark’s potential and encouraged him to explore options at Northern Kentucky University. Then Mark’s manager suggested he go back to school and get a bachelor’s degree. He took their advice and applied for NKU’s online Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies program.
“I knew going forward, it would definitely have a good return on investment,” he said.
Mark travels regularly for his job, which involves installing weight-based inventory management systems in hospitals across the country. That’s why enrolling in one of NKU’s online undergraduate programs worked best for him.
“I wouldn’t be able to pursue this degree if the online program was not available,” he said. “I couldn’t be in the actual classroom setting. For me, I was able to do the online accelerated program. That was really the only way that I’d be able to get my bachelor’s degree.”
Despite initial concerns about learning online, Mark found the format approachable and streamlined. “I’ve been able to really tackle the workload. Years of experience in the workforce have prepared me to be a better student now than I would have been in my early 20s,” he reflected. “Time management is crucial, but it’s definitely doable.”
Mark’s journey to his B.A. was also driven by a desire to expand his skillset and enhance his professional interactions. Working in hospitals, interacting daily with everyone from administrators to materials management staff, he realized the value of a communications degree.
Mark is quick to acknowledge the significant impact his education has had on his career. “I moved up to implementation manager and earned a 35% raise during my studies at NKU,” he said. “The education definitely played a role in that promotion.” The combination of his work experience and the knowledge gained through his degree has enhanced his ability to train and interact with hospital staff, ultimately improving service delivery for nurses and patients.
The skills Mark developed through his coursework have been directly applicable to his job. “Public speaking was a great class. I’ve also learned a lot from communication theory and interpersonal relationships, which have been crucial for my role as a manager,” he elaborated.
For prospective students, Mark offers valuable advice. “Look at the program and talk to your advisor,” he emphasized. “It’s a great option if your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend in-person classes.”
