Northern Kentucky University welcomes those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. NKU was recently designated as a bronze status 2019-2020 Military Friendly School by Victory Media. College and graduate students have access to NKU’s Veterans Resource Station, which provides specialized programs to veterans, their dependents, active duty service persons and members of the Selected Reserve.
The Veterans Resource Station’s full-time staff members are available to help students with:
- VA benefits
- Job placement
- Admissions
- Preparation for graduation
- General student counseling
How Do GI Bill Benefits Work?
There are several GI Bills available for active duty members and veterans of the armed forces. These include:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill: This federal program provides full tuition for members of the armed forces who attend a public university.
- Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty and Selected Reserve: These programs support active duty and selected reserve service members, respectively.
- Vocational Rehabilitation and Education Program: This program applies to service members who have certain disabilities or employment handicaps.
- Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program: Dependents of veterans are eligible for this program.
- Reserve Educational Assistance Program: This education assistance program is used by reserve members who were called to active duty.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill, one of the most commonly used by college and graduate students, provides up to 36 months of tuition assistance for veterans. The federal program also offers a monthly housing allowance and book stipend. The housing reimbursement is based on the ZIP code of the housing area, and the book stipend covers up to $1,000 of assistance per year. The Post-9/11 GI Bill has awarded more than 700,000 veterans with educational assistance to date.
According to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, the GI Bill pays $9,744 per year to NKU per eligible student. Veterans are also eligible for a $1,389 per month ($6,251 per semester) housing allowance and a $1,000 yearly book stipend. The total potential benefit for veterans who attend NKU’s online MBA program is well over $20,000 per year. These benefit amounts are based on site data from September 12, 2019. To date, NKU has helped 282 active members and veterans receive funds through the various GI Bills.
