A Military-Friendly School for Your Online Bachelor's Degree

Northern Kentucky University offers resources to help active/veteran military members, reservists and members of the National Guard, as well as their dependents, navigate their higher-education journey, from admission through graduation. Plus, various governmental programs offer financial assistance with everything from tuition to living expenses. Earning your bachelor's degree online during or after military service is an achievable goal.

What Makes NKU a Military-Friendly School?

NKU values the service of military members. The tradition has continued since the school's early days in 1946, when World War II veterans on the GI Bill took classes offered through the University of Kentucky's educational extension.

Today NKU's Veterans Resource Station  (VRS) stands ready to help former service members succeed with their educational and career goals. The school has garnered numerous accolades for its support of military personnel. NKU was designated as a bronze status 2019-2020 Military Friendly School by Victory Media. It has placed among the best colleges for vets by publications such as the Military Times.

How Does NKU Help Military Members Succeed in Their Educational Goals?

NKU offers comprehensive resources and guidance to students with military backgrounds. To start, application fees for online bachelor's degree programs are waived for active/veteran military members. NKU's Veterans Resource Station further assists in the admissions process, helping applicants through the necessary steps.

This guidance does not end with admission. Dedicated resource staff are committed to helping active/veteran military members, as well as reservists and members of the National Guard, succeed in every aspect of school. NKU offers many programs and services, including those centered on social/community building and awareness, peer mentoring, and academic advising.

How Can NKU Help Me Afford College?

Beyond traditional student financial aid, NKU provides information detailing military-specific scholarships available, including eligibility requirements and links for further information.

And, importantly, NKU has extensive online resources and staff to help guide students through the steps to using veterans education benefits. There are various programs that students may be eligible for, namely the different GI Bills. Eligibility and the amount of education benefits a student receives will vary based on factors like duration and type of service. These benefits can pay up to 100% of tuition for a bachelor's degree program in addition to money for books and a monthly stipend for living expenses.

NKU's veterans resources staff can help students navigate their education benefits. The university has two VA certifying officials conveniently and centrally located within the One Stop student service area on campus. These officials work directly with student veterans and dependents on aligning their veteran education benefits, while also answering any questions around benefits, financial assistance, and processes. The VRS and certifying officials work closely with student veterans and dependents to ensure ongoing, wraparound support.

Students can also research their benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Another useful resource for learning about education benefits is
