Northern Kentucky University offers seven online education master’s degree programs and five online education specialist degree programs designed to accommodate the needs of working professionals seeking an advanced degree in education. NKU’s College of Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and online courses are taught by the same distinguished faculty who teach on campus.
Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader in Curriculum & Instruction
This online program consists of 12 courses, comprising 30 credit hours and is approved by the Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB). You can attain Rank 2 teaching certification in Kentucky upon completion of this program, in which you will learn how to develop effective instructional approaches and how to evaluate your students’ progress. In addition, you will learn how to integrate new technology and strategies into the classroom.
Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader in Special Education
The M.A. in Education in Special Education online program can be completed in as few as 18 months. The 12 courses (30 credit hours) will prepare you to work with children with exceptionalities as well as help you become a more effective teacher for all children. You will learn behavior analysis techniques, collaboration, inclusive practices, ways to assess students, and more.
Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader in Autism & Applied Behavior Analysis
NKU’s online M.A. in Education in Autism & Applied Behavior Analysis consists of 13 courses and 33 credit hours. You will learn the skills specific to using applied behavior analysis for children with autism, developmental disabilities, and behavioral problems.
Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader in Learning & Behavior Disorders (LBD)
This degree program consists of 10 courses comprising 30 credit hours. Students seeking Rank 2 certification in Kentucky must complete an additional 18-21 credit hours. You will acquire a solid foundation in the theory and pedagogy needed to support all learners and encourage positive behavior change. In addition, you will learn about trends and effective interventions for children with learning disabilities and behavior disorders.
Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader in Moderate & Severe Disabilities (MSD)
Students completing this program will be prepared to work with students with intellectual disabilities that impede academic achievement. You will learn how to assess students with MSD, how to design differentiated instruction, behavior management skills, and how to collaborate with teachers and parents. There are 12 courses (30 credit hours), and an additional 19-22 credit hours are required for those seeking Rank 2 certification.
Master of Arts in Teaching – Middle Grades
Professionals with bachelor’s degrees in non-education fields can complete this master’s program in order to teach at the middle grades level. You will prepare to work with grades 5-9 and learn about trends in education, behavior management, curriculum design and assessment, the role of cultural identity, plus much more. You can choose from concentrations in Science, Math, Social Studies, or English. The program consists of 13 courses, with a total of 36 credit hours.
Master of Arts in Teaching – Secondary Education
Those with non-education bachelor’s degrees who are interested in teaching grades 8-12 can complete this program in order to become teachers at the secondary level. You will complete 13 courses (36 credit hours) and can choose a concentration in Science, Math, Social Studies, or English.
Education Specialist in Teaching and Leading – Curriculum & Instruction
This program can be completed in as few as 18 months and consists of 12 courses (30 credit hours) designed to help you learn best practices in learner-centered curriculum and instructional design. You will learn strategies, effective teaching, program evaluation, student assessment, and teacher professional development.
Education Specialist in Teaching and Leading – Autism & Applied Behavior Analysis
Learning how to educate children with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges is the focus of this program. It consists of 11 courses comprising 33 credit hours and includes a verified course sequence toward the Board Certified Behavior Analyst credential. You can also achieve Rank I designation on your Kentucky teaching certificate through this program. It includes clinical experiences and a capstone project.
Education Specialist in Teaching and Leading – Special Education
Ten courses adding up to 30 credit hours comprise this program that prepares teachers to become more effective with special needs students. You can build toward Rank I teaching certification in Kentucky. Application of the methodology and management techniques pertaining to educational programs for students with disabilities and orthopedic and/or health impairments is covered. The program includes clinical experiences and a capstone project.
Education Specialist in Teaching and Leading – Moderate & Severe Disabilities
Learn how to help students overcome advanced intellectual disabilities or behavioral challenges. Program coursework covers diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, as well as language development and assistive technologies. The program prepares students for Rank I teaching certification in Kentucky. The program comprises 30 credit hours, with an additional 19-22 credit hours required for students seeking certification. Clinical experiences and a capstone project are part of the curriculum.
Education Specialist in Teaching and Leading – Learning & Behavior Disorders
This program covers remedial learning and behavior disorders, intellectual and orthopedic disabilities, methods for educational assessment, and more. Educators can boost their research and leadership skills to be more effective in the general education classroom. They can also prepare for leadership opportunities in the school or district and build toward earning Rank I teaching certification in Kentucky. Consisting of 10 courses worth 30 credit hours, the program includes clinical experiences and a capstone project. Students seeking certification will complete an additional 18-21 credit hours.
